Section 8-2 Diesel Engines 2(Mass Produced Diesel Engines)


811. Application


1. Where the manufacturer obtained the Approval of Quality Assurance System specified in Ch 5 ap- ply to the Type Approval of diesel engines having a cylinder bore not exceeding 300 mm and manufactured at the same manufacturing plant by mass production methods, in principle, the Society apply to the requirements of this Section for the tests and inspection of diesel engines.


2. Mass produced diesel engines for which the application of this Section is required are to comply with the definition of 101. 3.


3. Where the manufacturer apply to the approval by manufacturer's rating not the maximum continuous output of engine, the Society correspondingly apply to the requirements in this Section.


812. Definitions for mass produced diesel engines

Mass produced diesel engines are diesel engines manufactured in accordance with (1) through (5) below:

(1) Those mass produced under the strict quality control on materials and parts in accordance with

the programme agreed by the Society.

(2) Those manufactured through the used of jigs or automatic machines designed to machine parts to close tolerances for interchangeability, and which are to be verified on a regular inspection basis.

(3) Those parts taken from the stock after manufacture requiring little or no manual adjustments or finishing work in the assembly process.

(4) Those subjected to shop test for individual engines under the established testing programme.

(5) When engines selected at random are subjected to detailed tests for performance evaluation after completion of the shop tests.


813. Major components

The major components referred to in this Section are as follows:

Cylinder cover, cylinder liner, piston, piston pin, connecting rod, cylinder block, bed plate, crank- shaft, cam, camshaft, camshaft driving gears, bearing (top and bottom bearings of connecting rod, main bearing), bolt (small end bolt and big end bolt of connecting rod, tension bolt, main bearing bolt, coupling bolt), pumps attached to engine (lubricating oil, cooling water, fuel oil), pipings at- tached to engine (starting air system, fuel injection system), coolers attached to engine (lubricating oil, cooling water, supercharged air), exhaust gas turbocharger, reduction gear, power transmission shaft and flexible coupling.


814. Data to be submitted

In addition to those specified in 102., the documents is to be submitted according to Table 5.1.4

of Pt 5, Ch 1, 203. of the Rules and Pt 5, Ch 1, 203. of the Guidance relating to the Rules.


815. Type tests

The type tests are to be carried out in accordance with the requirements given in Table 3.8.2.


816. Test records

The Quality Control Manager is to submit a report on the test records describing the following items for each engine to the Society. However, no entry may be made on item (5) when the Surveyor considers it unnecessary.

(1) Intended service

(2) Serial No. of engine

(3) Type of engine

(4) Principal particulars (maximum continuous output and revolution, normal continuous output and revolution and reversing output and revolution, number of cylinders, cylinder bore, piston stroke, indicated mean effective pressure, brake mean effective pressure, maximum pressure in cylinder, etc.)

(5) Date of inspection and inspection records on major components (material inspection, finishing in- spection, hydrostatic test, welding inspection and others)

(6) Records of shop tests

Running test and overhaul inspection

Running test and overhaul inspection are to be carried out under the test conditions as specified in the following (1) to (5). In this case, the reduction gears and flexible couplings applied to the requirement in 813. are to be subjected to running tests after being assembled into engines as a standard.

(1) Selection of test engine

One set of test engine is to be selected from the production line.

(2) Testing programme

(a) The testing programme is, in principle, to be as follows:

Maximum continuous output test 80 hours

110 % overload test 8 hours

25 %, 50 %, 75 % and 90 % partial load test 10 hours

Intermittent load test 2 hours

Starting test

Reverse running test (direct reversing engine only)

Performance test of overspeed protection device

Performance test of low L.O. pressure alarm

Exhaust driven turboblower out of action test

Minimum speed test (main engine only)

Idling speed test (auxiliary engine only)

(b) The tests at the above-mentioned outputs are to be combined together in working cycle which are to be repeated subsequently with the whole duration within the limits indicated.

(c) The overload is to be alternately carried out with following:

110 % output and 100 % rpm of the maximum continuous output

110 % output and 103 % rpm of the maximum continuous output

(3) Condition of tests

The following items are to be recorded.

Ambient air temperature

Ambient air pressure

Atmospheric humidity

External cooling water temperature

Fuel and lubricating oil characteristics

(4) Measurements and records

(a) The following values of measurement are to be recorded:

Brake horsepower

Torque

Maximum combustion pressure

Engine rpm

Indicated pressure diagrams (if practicable)

Exhaust smoke

Lubricating oil pressure and temperature

Exhaust gas temperature in exhaust manifold

Cooling water pressure and temperature

(b) The following items are to be added for the supercharged engine:

Rotational speed of exhaust driven turboblower

Air temperature and pressure before and after air cooler

Exhaust gas temperature and pressure before and after exhaust driven turboblower

Cooling water temperature at cooler inlet

(5) Examination after test

After testing, overhaul inspection is to be carried out on main parts.


Additional tests

Notwithstanding the requirements of running test and overhaul inspection, tests such as torsional vi- bration measurement considered necessary may be additionally required for the engine, and for reduction gears, flexible couplings and exhaust gas turbocharger, special tests may be carried out.

NOTES:

(1) For engines that are to be approved for different purpose (multipurpose engines), and that have different per- formance for each purpose, the programme and duration of test will be modified to cover the whole range of the engine performance taking into account the most severe values.

(2) The maximum continuous output for which the engine is to be tested is the output corresponding to that de- clared by the manufacturer and agreed by the Society, i.e. actual maximum power which the engine is capable

of delivering continuously between the normal maintenance intervals stated by the manufacturer at speed and under the stated ambient conditions.
